Blog Tour: Review of Here (On The Otherside #1) by Denise Grover Swank

A link can be found at the bottom of the post.

Sixteen year old Julia Phillips buries herself in guilt after killing her best friend Monica in a car accident. Julia awoke in the hospital with a broken leg, a new talent for drawing and false memories of the accident, in which she dies and Monica lives. The doctors attribute this to her head injury, but no one can explain how a bracelet engraved with her name ended up at the scene of the accident. A bracelet no one has ever seen before.

Classmate Evan Whittaker paid Julia no attention before the accident, let alone after. Now suddenly he’s volunteering to tutor her and offering to drive her home. She can't ignore that his new obsession started after his two-day disappearance last week and that he wears a pendant she’s been drawing for months. When the police show up one night looking for Evan, he begs Julia to run with him, convincing her that Monica is still alive. Julia agrees to go, never guessing where he’s really from.
I don't think this is the official trailer.  Most likely fan made!
** A copy of the book was provided to us for an honest review.
We were in no way paid for our opinion **

I will admit that the first thing that drew me to this book was the cover. Eerily beautiful… Then I read the synopsis, and I was done. Hooked!

From the very first chapter straight through to the very end, this book captivated my attention. There was so much emotion poured in the pages of this book, how could you not sit up and notice!

The author, Denise Grover Swank, does a fantastic job of depicting the seriousness of loss and the impact it has on everyone, especially with Julia Phillips. Julia was involved in the same car accident as her best friend, Monica. Julia lived…Monica did not. We see in the early chapters just how devastated Julia is with this, and how she is slowly trying to deal with her life now, and we also see the struggles that her family goes through as well.

I loved that this book! The book is pretty much split in half. The first half, we go through the day to day of Julia’s life after her best friend’s death. We witness how her fellow classmates perceive her, as well as her teachers. Just when Julia thinks things just won’t get better, enter Evan. *insert sigh* I will admit, that I crushed on Evan like there was no tomorrow. He reminded me of a little bit of Edward Cullen from Twilight, and a dash of Max Evans from Roswell. He is sweet, and endearing and his actions are very white knight. All the characters found in the pages of Here all have a personality of their very own, and that’s what I loved so much about this book.

Not only did I get to seriously crush over Evan, but then we meet Reese, who is so very swoon worthy. I only wish that there was more of Reese in the first half! It was pretty much we meet him, and then craziness ensues. BUT we do see quite a lot more of him in the second half of the book, which is where I fell for him. What was a little unbelieveable for me was how Julia was able to declare her feelings for him so strongly after having only met him for a week…or was it REALLY only a week… Intrigued? I really can’t give you more without giving away the “gasp” factor of the book.

The second half is where all the heart stopping action begins, and where we are thrown in to a tale of Dystopian proportions. It is pretty much non-stop action! I flew through the last half, completely devouring it and am still craving more! It was a lot of wondering who to trust, and what will seriously happen next? It was an emotional race to the end, with a perfect cliff hanger to segue into a second book.

At first, as I was reading about Evan’s sudden obsession, fascination and devotion for Julia, I was already rolling my eyes, thinking “oh great, another instant love” type scenario. Well…it’s not. It may seem like it at first…but you’ll just have to read the book to find out why! I loved the twists and turns found in this book. And yes, there were a few parts in the book where tears met my eyes. Those scenes were written with so much emotion and love I couldn’t help but shed a tear (or two or three). There is just so much more that I want to say, but I don’t want to give away the awesome plot twists for you. You’ll just have to trust me!
