A Bite's Tale by Veronica Blade!
Today, we'll be reviewing both A Bite's Tale: A Furry Fable AND
From Fame To Shame with excerpts.
A Cinderella who spends her nights as a wolf. A prince with a taste for blood.
Seventeen year old Cydney struggles against her werewolf nature, trying to keep everyone around her safe. No way will she risk exposing the beast at the prince’s ball, no matter how her two cousins try to persuade her. Even as she attempts to get on with her life, Cydney can’t forget the boy she loved three summers ago — or what she did to him after losing control.
Turned into a vampire to save his life, the prince refuses to live up to his royal duties. He just wants to find the girl he loved and lost...the werewolf girl who bit him. But his father, the king, commands him to attend a ball where he must choose a wife. Can he find his Cinderella before he's forced to marry another? He doesn’t even have her real name, much less a glass slipper.
After reading what A Bite’s Tale was about, I am proud to say that I was more than happy to begin and read the re-telling of a classic fairytale. After reading the synopsis I was so thrilled to read the supernatural re-telling of the tale. To make things better, once I had finished the novella, I was able to say that this is definitely on my list of favorites. For those of you who don’t know, this is the story of a girl name Cydney Ella who is a werewolf and has to go to a ball to meet the vampire prince, whom she doesn’t know is the same boy she attacked while in her werewolf form.
The novel started off with a ton of romance (la “awww”) between the prince in not-so-disguise and Cydney, who was then going by the name of Cinderella. Not only does it tell us just how the Prince and Cydney met, but also what happened that lead to Cydney not returning to the island that the Prince lived on. Oh! And it also opened with their first kiss. I will also add that the cuteness of the opening two chapters and the split scene of action is enough to have any reader hooked. After all of that drama we get to the really good stuff.
Personally, the inner war and fear within Cydney was one of the most intriguing parts of the novella. It was saddening to read that in Cydney’s form of protecting her family from her shift, she ends up having to lock herself in the basement each consecutive night to keep her family from herself. Not to mention that multiple times author Veronica Blade managed to describe, with crystal clarity might I add, the small details of how, Cydney’s aunt Mina showed small amounts of fear towards Cydney. But it isn’t like Aunt Mina was the evil step-mother known from the classic tale, in fact in this story Aunt Mina is a loving and caring woman who takes in Cydney and her brother after their mother’s death. And the search and lengths that Prince Remy went to to find Cydney were just the icing on the cake in this story. Especially since almost everything that he did during the novel was revolved around being reunited with Cydney had my heart melting. Mainly because it’s just so hard to find guys like that in the real world (am I right or am I right?).
If I’d known it could be like this and that she’d wanted it too, I would’ve kissed her ages ago. I mentally kicked myself for wasting all those weeks when we could’ve been doing this the entire time.
Her hand crept up under my shirt and her fingers trailed along my back. Goosebumps danced on my skin. She pressed closer against me and I took the kiss deeper, letting loose my weeks of pent up craving for her.
I didn’t think life could get any more perfect than being with Cindy. And I no longer yearned for a normal life. I wanted things to stay exactly as they were at that moment. With my Cinderella.
A soft moan erupted from my throat when she angled her face to take the kiss still deeper. I slid my arms around her waist and the tips of my fingers inched up underneath her tank top.
But it wasn’t a usual shiver. Her whole body began to tremble and I nearly lost my hold on her. I pulled back. Cindy’s eyes grew huge and her pupils dilated.
She threw her head back, her limbs vibrating as she growled. No, not a growl. It was more like a dull roar, full of pain and anguish. Was she… was my Cindy about to turn into a werewolf? Or was it something else? Maybe if I held her again, whatever was happening to her might stop. I lunged for her.
“Get away from me!” Sobbing, she shoved me back, but in the process, one of her claws raked across my chest.
I flinched, as blood beaded on my skin. A little scratch wasn’t going to stop me though. Not when Cindy needed my help. I stepped forward again.
Her lips curled up, exposing long, growing teeth and she shrieked. Yeah, she’d hit werewolf maturity all right. But she hadn’t completely morphed. Just her teeth and nails. Maybe if I calmed her, she could prevent it from progressing. I wrapped my arms around her waist, as I’d done just moments ago, and pulled her close.
She shrieked again, then searing pain shot through my arm.
Werewolf bite. Oh, crap. My dad was going to kill me… unless the werewolf virus beat him to it.
The forest spun around me and I couldn’t keep my eyelids up. My muscles went lax and when the ground rose to slam against me, I didn’t feel a thing.
When good-girl Maddie switches places with her famous bad-girl twin Jackie, she has some pretty high stilettos to fill.
Despite the danger of tabloid drama if their identity swap is discovered, Maddie has to save her sister's butt. When Jackie’s ex-boyfriend shows up with a rekindled spark for “Jackie,” his deep gray eyes and sweet kisses make Maddie's heart thumpety thump. But dating the guy who dumped her sister is a no-no. Too bad Dallas isn’t used to girls saying no. What will happen when he discovers Maddie’s deception?
From the start of the novella where readers get to watch as the superstar Jackie Bloom begs her twin sister (and our main character) Maddie to pretend to be her for just a little while—I was hooked! Not only does author Veronica Blade create another highly detailed world where readers are able to pick out and create every single detail in their mind, but because of the theme and setting of the novella it felt like I was reading a romantic chick flick in the format of a book!
Not to mention that throughout reading From Fame to Shame I was able to imagine just what our real world celebrities actually go through. From the red carpet premier to the tabloids spreading rumors, Maddie had huge shoes to fill and not to mention that her celeb sister’s ex-boyfriend is falling for her. Talk about the perfect mixture of drama. Since I have brought up the ex-boyfriend factor, I think that being the good person I am that I have to tell you about Dallas. He is just… perfect (I personally imagined him as Chase Crawford). Not only is he written as perfect boyfriend material, but he’s described as the perfect guy. With the perfect body and the sexiest personality, he is my official fictional celebrity boyfriend (and the first).
I would recommend this novella to somebody who wants to experience the life of a celebrity for the day, or fans of the glitz and glam of Hollywood. An amazing quick read that I won’t soon forget.
“And what are your plans later tonight?” Dallas reached up to rub a lock of my hair between his thumb and finger.
“Plans?” My mouth went dry. He stood way too close and my concentration slipped.
“You always have plans.” His eyes caressed my face.
“Not tonight.” Somewhere deep in my soul, I knew that was the wrong answer. It opened the door to a date with him, which would lead straight to trouble. But when your brain stops working, telling the truth is so much easier.
“A friend told me that Josh Adams is jamming at Hanks Blues tonight.”
I nodded, since it was all I was capable of at the moment.
“We’ll have dinner there. I’ll pick you up at six.”
Preventing Dallas from making another date with me would’ve been smart. The words hovered in my throat, but I couldn’t force them out. Even if I didn’t reject his offer, I needed to say something. Or, at the very least, finish cleaning up after breakfast. And yet, I couldn’t move. I just stared into his eyes as they fixed on mine.
His gaze fell to my mouth, then he reached both hands up to cup my face and, inch by inch, brought his mouth to mine.
Our lips touched, feather-light. He shifted his body and brought his thighs against mine, but he didn’t deepen the kiss. He just skimmed the surface, gently teasing my mouth until my body hummed. Seconds stretched and my lungs stilled as I waited for his next move.
Then, slowly, he withdrew, keeping close enough that I still felt his warm breath against my skin. I couldn’t catch my breath. A thick haze clouded my brain and I worried he might ask me something, anything, that required a response and I’d slip up. Fear that I’d blow it for Jackie paralyzed me.
Oh, my God! Jackie! If she knew I’d just kissed the guy who dumped her, she’d be hurt and feel betrayed. Jackie didn’t need that, on top of everything else.
“I…” I had no idea what to say. I only knew that if someone didn’t say something soon and break the trance, I would betray Jackie worse than I already had. Because, more than anything, I wanted this guy, no matter how nice he was.
