Thanks for stopping by the blog for my Tour Stop for
The Mayfair Moon by J.A. Redmerski, hosted by ATomR Book Blog Tours!
We are so excited to have Gemma, the heroine of Golden Blood, stop by
and talk to us a little bit about LOVE!
First, a little something about the book, and our thoughts...
Gemma Hart never knows when her father is going to whisk her back in time. Her toes start tingling and she has a few minutes to find a secret haven where she can disintegrate and appear in another time and place. While “across the line,” her training and skills are put to the test as she completes a mission that will change history for the lucky few her father has selected.
Gemma's parents are adamant that secrecy is paramount to her family’s safety. If people knew what they were capable of, they could be "used and abused", as her mother always says. Afraid she might accidentally utter the truth and break the ancient oath of her people, Gemma spends her school days as a loner. Only one thing can throw her sheltered life askew... Harrison Granger.
Harrison never expected to talk to the strange Hart girl, but after a brief encounter he can't stop thinking about her. He begins a campaign to chisel away her icy veneer and is met with unexpected consequences. As he slowly wins this girl over, he enters a surreal world that has him fighting to keep his new found love and his life.
Let me just start off and say that I loved everything about Golden Blood; the characters. The plot. The Time Spirits and obviously the romance. Anyhow, I started Golden Blood a little bit blind. All I knew was that there was time travel involved and that was about everything. But after reading the opening chapter, I was already falling in love with the novel. What made me fall even harder was the way that the novel switched POV’s between both Gemma and Harrison, the two main characters who are falling into a forbidden romance.
To me, it was the total air of mystery and secrecy that Gemma has that made her a totally but kicking main character. Not only does Gemma come from a strict family of Time Spirits, which are basically people who are able to turn their bodies into golden dust and travel backwards (and only backwards) in time, but she could also beat people up. Literally. Author, Melissa Pearl described Gemma as a dangerous girl who could break every bone in your body if she wanted to. I know what you’re thinking: Are you being serious? Yes. Yes I am. In fact, Gemma reminded me of a non-dhampir Rose Hathaway from the Vampire Academy series.
Now to the good stuff, the romance. When Harrison and Gemma first meet, I was filled with a series of “Awwwwwww” and a few more “Awwwwww’s” (or whatever the plural form of aw is). Again, Melissa Pearl managed to describe it in this perfect way where I could easily imagine the warmth that Harrison felt whenever he was around Gemma or that first time when he accidentally sees her go “across the line” and vanish into the past. The relationship between Harrison and Gemma is one that I could easily compare to Edward and Bella or Jace and Clary. It’s definitely one of those character romances where you can’t find anything wrong with it.
While Pearl did describe the world and setting around all of the characters with great fluency and kept up a consistent pace, I only had one complaint and it is that I wish there was more conflict. Don’t get me wrong, the ending is gasp-worthy, it’s just that I wished there was a bit more of a bigger picture. Though, I’m assuming that that gets introduced in later novels considering the last few paragraphs that Golden Blood finished with.
I would recommend this to anybody who wants to read a very unique novel and wants to spend a few chapters living in the past. Fans of the supernatural and of romance will definitely be falling in love with Golden Blood.
Let's Talk About Love ... with Gemma Hart
1 - Do you believe in love at first sight?
Yes I do. Having experienced it personally, it's easy to say that. But I have actually heard of people who saw each other and within a few short months were married and have stayed that way. It doesn't happen for everybody. I feel very lucky that it happened to me.
2 - What qualities do you look for in a guy?
I like someone who is quietly strong, who can make me feel safe and protected. I mean, I can physically look after myself, but sometimes you just want I guy to tell you that he cares about you and you don't have to fight on your own. I also think finding someone you can talk to about anything is important. Someone who makes you feel comfortable and good about who you are.
3 - Describe what your perfect date would be.
Somewhere quiet, without an audience. Like going to an isolated beach or hiking somewhere where no one can find you. Take out dinner - maybe a pizza or something. Just hanging out, talking, star gazing. I don't know... just something simple.
4 - Do you believe love can still work as a time traveler?
I like to believe it can, but if I'm really honest, I'm not sure. I don't know if this can last. I know I want it to, more than anything, but I don't control my life, my father does. If he wanted to, he could pull me anywhere, keep me anywhere, change whatever history he wanted to. He could make everything I love disappear. So - all I can do is enjoy now and just... hope.
5 - Hypothetically speaking, do you think you could fall in love with a historical figure from before your time?
Yes. I think it would be very easy to fall in love with someone from another time... especially if you were in that time long enough. Like I said before, I believe in love at first sight, so it's always a possibility.
6 - Do you think love can conquer all?
I wish I could. I really, really wish that love could conquer all, but I just don't know. Harrison believes it, but I'm just trying to be realistic. Hope, as much I cling to it, is fragile. I think if my parents could love Harrison... or the idea of me being in love with Harrison then maybe love could win. I want my answer to be yes. Love should be able to conquer all.
Thanks for stopping by Gemma!
About the author:
I used to be a full time teacher (11-13 year olds) then I became a full time mother. During that time I also found my passion for writing. Over the last ten years I have been studying the craft and putting myself out there.
My first trilogy is being self-published through Smashwords & Amazon.
Golden Blood was released in November 2011 and has been getting great reviews, along with Black Blood (Bk #2), which came out in December 2011. Pure Blood (Bk #3) is due for release in February 2012.
It has been a totally thrilling ride and I can't wait to keep putting my stuff out there.
I live in New Zealand with my husband and two sons, but we are moving to China in August, as my husband has scored a great job working at an international school in Suzhou. It's going to be a busy and exciting year :)
