Mackie Doyle wants a normal teenage life . . . girls, music, friends. But Mackie is anything but normal. He is from a darker world filled with death and decay. Mackie is a Replacement, he was switched with a human baby's 16 years ago, and has lived a life of lies and deceit. He is unable to be around blood, and is incapable of standing on consecrated ground. He is slowly dying and is offered a temporary cure from the place he rightfully belongs, the underworld of Mayhem. But when his friend, Tate's baby sister goes missing, Mackie is pulled into this world where he must face the very same people who placed him into a world that is killing him.
Dark, creepy, captivating. The Replacement was all that and then some. It really made you think about what was really going bump in the night, what creepy's are lurking around your windows, and if there could be a dark underworld beneath our feet. I thought this was a great book, and the cover (Ooooooo!)
Yovanoff's writing style is easy to follow, and gave the reader such vivid details that you could clearly imagine this dark world called Mayhem. You can easily smell the dank, musty underground caves and envision the unique and intense characters from this world. Yovanoff puts so much emotion into the characters in this novel, that they come to life right before your eyes. You can't help but sympathize with main character, Mackie Doyle. You gain such an understanding of what he feels, and his inner battle with having to deal with what he knows about himself.
The twists and turns that Yovanoff incorporates in this book leaves the reader longing to get to the next page. I was constantly left with a feeling of needing to know what was going to happen next. I finished this book in a day. I couldn't put it down. Seriously!
Anyone who enjoys supernatural stories should definitely check this book out. Prepare to meet the Cutter!
The Replacement was straight up creepy. Don't get me wrong it wasn't a horrible novel, it was actually one of the best I've read so far. The plot was just so creepy. I fell in love with the story after the first two chapters, especially with how unpredictable the whole thing was. Constantly I would flip one page expecting one thing only to find something different. The plot was original, especially with how Mackie comes from a world where everybody is a zombie. I don't mean the shuffling, moaning, mindless kind of zombie either, these zombies are still civilized. Especially the queen of the world they all live in: The Morrigan who wants Mackie back above all else.
I've never read anything like this, it was horror, paranormal and a thriller all mixed in one!! The other thing I found interesting about the Replacement from Brenna Yovanoff was how Mackie ends up coming to terms with the world he never knew, all because he meets Tate. The two hit it off almost the second they meet, you can totally tell that they'll end up being together. I thought I could relate with her only because she's so willing to get her little sister back, something I would totally do. Even though she has to go though zombies (and I hate zombies eeek!), don't forget that you can't have a story with zombie like characters without having one that gives everybody (living and dead) the heebie jeebies. The Cutter ( Doesn't his name say it all?)
I would check it out, put it at the top of your list (if your like me and have a list of books you want to buy) and plan a visit to the bookstore in the next twenty four hours. Sounds like a good plan. Why are you still here? GO AND GET IT!!
